The School of Architecture and the University of Hawai’i Community Design Center (UHCDC) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the starting rank of Specialist (S-3) to commence on the 1st of August 2020. We seek an individual for an 11-month appointment who can effectively bridge well-developed strengths in critical design practice with a demonstrated capacity for engaging both academic and professional communities. The chosen candidate will communicate a record of recognition and an evolving pattern of evidence of making strong contributions to the field in community-based design outreach and experiential learning. Candidates must hold a professional degree in architecture, and must clearly present a strong aptitude for and record of leadership and an ability to work within teams including members of the general public as well as colleagues in academic and practice communities.
The UHCDC is a year-round hybrid teaching practice established by the School of Architecture (SoA), building on SoA’s four decades of public service to Hawai’i and the Asia-Pacific region. The school established UHCDC as a University-wide platform for interdisciplinary research and design inquiry focusing on public-interest built environment projects, aimed at the integration of education, practice, and outreach. UHCDC projects offer applied teaching and research opportunities for faculty members across departments, and service-learning opportunities for students through academic instruction, internship, and post-graduate employment, providing a professional development pathway for students interested in public interest research, planning, and design. The UHCDC provides an opportunity for staff to earn Architecture Experience Program (AXP) hours, and is pre-approved by NCARB for community-based design center opportunities. Additionally, with securing grant support as a core component of the position, the Director is expected to provide at least 18% funding for their salary. Specific duties are expected to adapt over time depending on the volume and nature of future UHCDC funding and projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The responsibilities and primary functions of the position include, but are not limited to, administration, outreach, teaching, and research:
1. Teach graduate and undergraduate architecture courses with a focus on public interest design practices and community-engaged projects.
2. Teach collaboratively to integrate different knowledge cultures into the curriculum.
3. Support faculty and University-wide collaboration by pursuing multi-disciplinary teaching, applied research and scholarship, planning, and design opportunities for faculty members in the School of Architecture, the University, and the broader community.
4. Support the strategic plan for the School of Architecture and the university.
5. Oversee center-wide operations in coordination with staff, principal investigators, fiscal administrator, Dean of the school, and other relevant university administrators.
6. Secure diverse sources of funding for the UHCDC through grants and other fundraising efforts.
7. Provide administrative support for faculty, staff, and students on contracts, budgets, hiring, and staffing, and center practices.
8. Negotiate and manage Memoranda of Understanding and Memoranda of Agreements with various clients and agencies.
9. Manage day-to-day logistics for the center.
10. Ensure best practices that support the mission of the center in compliance with all University policies and procedures and applicable local, state, or federal laws.
11. Develop and manage program public relations and communications.
12. Create and maintain relationships with city, state, and other agencies.
13. Stay abreast with legislative activities that concern the center.
14. Create and maintain relationships with the professional community.
15. Plan and implement initiatives for the center that provide outreach opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to exchange knowledge with the University, local, and global community through workshops, speaker events, symposium, exhibitions, competitions, and other sharing formats.
16. Manage applied research, planning, and design projects and project teams.
17. Provide a supportive and collegial work environment for students, staff, and faculty.
1. Graduate degree in Architecture from an accredited University with recognized standing.
2. A license to practice architecture.
3. Demonstrated experience obtaining extramural funding.
4. 5+ years of professional work in architecture or a related field, with practical experience in a management role. Experience teaching at a university level.
5. Experience preparing annual budgets, proposals, project contracts.
6. Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from stakeholder groups including, but not limited to, students, staff, faculty, administrators, agency representatives, professional community members, community partners and organizing design outreach initiative and events.
7. Computer proficiency in MS Office, Adobe, and other modelling software. Knowledge of and ability to manage a consistent CAD standard and identity.
1. Experience developing university student internship opportunities.
2. Experience working in a community design center or related entity. And familiarity with using public interest design strategies or community design practices and methodologies.
3. A demonstrated record of published peer-reviewed journal articles, professional reports and awards.
4. Demonstrated interest in Hawaii’s context and an awareness of local Hawaiian culture.
5. Experience liaising with government and university representatives.
