The Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts University is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach a course in Scenic Painting in the fall semester 2025. The class meets Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:30-5:45pm in the Tufts University Balch Arena Theater.

Scenic Painting Course Description: This course is a mixed-level course. Introductory skills to be taught include the study and practice of the techniques of scene painting and surface treatment applicable to the execution of theatrical designs. More advanced students may expand upon these techniques, with an emphasis on interpretation along with technique. Students may learn painted drapery and foliage along with faux finishes such as peeling /cracking paint and plaster surfaces. Advanced students may complete a final project that is similar to the United Scenic Artists' Union exam.

 

Qualifications

Applicants should hold an MFA in Theatrical Technology or Theatre Design (preferred) or have equivalent professional experience, and have some teaching experience at the college level.
