The UCLA Music Department in the Herb Alpert School of Music invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track professorial position as Director of Opera, starting the 2024-25 academic year. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required, but a Master's degree, (MM, MFA, MA), DMA, and/or significant non-academic experience in the world of opera/music theatre production and performance are preferred. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table 1 for the salary range. The salary range for this position is $74,600 - $197,100. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Applicants should have experience/interest in the following: broad knowledge of both canonical, rare, and contemporary opera/music theatre (including new work); familiarity with foreign languages sufficient to enable textual and analytical work on canonical, rare, and new/contemporary opera/music theatre; ability to coach singers on interpretation of arias and scene work; directing graduate and undergraduate student singers in productions; basic knowledge of vocal performance technique ensuring informed collaboration with Voice faculty; readiness to collaborate with MFA Design students in devising scenic, costume, and lighting designs for at least one production yearly; readiness to collaborate with the Director of Choral Studies and the Director of Orchestral Studies in coordinating schedules to avoid conflicts; knowledge about opera production history and notable performers/stage directors/choreographers/designers of the past and present; knowledge about acting training; experience of dance and movement training, although the Director would not be responsible for this training themself unless appropriate; readiness to engage in fundraising activities; ability to review graduate written work, engage in academic committee work as part of academic service at UCLA, and to serve on academic and staff search committees. The candidate must be willing to collaborate with the Music Director of Opera Studio.

The Director of Opera UCLA will be expected to teach Opera Workshop, with movement and acting classes incorporated into the training, and direct Opera UCLA productions as needed. Other courses could include seminars or workshops on opera-related topics of interest to the Director of Opera UCLA, or Master Class in Opera, a graduate course which focuses on preparing advanced students for the next steps in their professional path, including intensive preparation on a set of arias.
