The College of Design at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is seeking a leader for the position of Head of the School of Architecture. Practicing architects are actively involved in our curricula as critics, mentors, and adjunct professors. The Head of the School will become a leader in both the College of Design and the Twin Cities community of practice. The successful candidate will have a clearly defined and dynamic vision for the future of the discipline, knowledge of architectural practice and teaching, and insight into the profession’s role in meeting the challenges of a diverse and changing world. The Head of the School will articulate positions and practices with regard to the role of architecture in a future characterized by rapid social, ecological, and technological transformation.
This is a 100%-time, 12-month, academic administrative appointment at the level of Head with Faculty Rank (#9361), with an initial appointment of three years. Appointment as Head thereafter will be annually renewable, with ongoing retention of the tenured rank. Reappointment is contingent upon administrative review and evaluation. The Head must meet School of Architecture criteria for University tenure, through scholarly and/or practice achievements. The starting date for this position is negotiable, preferably no later than June 2020. Salary is commensurate with experience and reflects a faculty salary with administrative augmentation.
Professional or terminal degree in architecture; (BArch, MArch, MS in Architecture, or PhD.)
Substantial experience in architectural education and/or practice compatible with the offerings of the School and College.
Record of achievement in leadership, such as one or more of the following or equivalent: academic administration, firm leadership, grant leadership, faculty development, student recruiting, and/or other related experiences.
Eligible for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with University tenure according to School of Architecture criteria, based on scholarly and/or practice achievements.
Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of a broad range of design and scholarly disciplines and their affinity with architecture.
Experience teaching architecture at a college level.
Experience with interdisciplinary teaching, research, and/or practice.
Commitment to fostering gender equity and ethnic diversity, and to supporting diversity of ideas and perspectives.
Ability to build consensus and to demonstrate empathy as a leader.
Experience in professional and/or graduate education.
Understanding of the value of professional licensure and commitment to the School’s role in supporting licensure for graduates.
Experience building resources from industry, foundations, donors and/or government sources to support teaching, research, scholarship, and/or institutional priorities.
Strong record of experience in administration, including financial and personnel management.
Record of mentoring the scholarly/creative productivity of others.
Record of success in supporting curricular development and programmatic innovation in undergraduate and/or graduate education.
Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of open, honest, and respectful discussion, and a culture of civility and collegiality by serving as an engaged community leader.
Ability to work productively with University and College administrators, faculty, staff, students, and/or other constituencies.
Ability to advocate for the School of Architecture, College of Design, and University of Minnesota, within and outside of the University.
