Visiting Assistant Professor Landscape Architecture

Auburn University

Posting Number P1630F

The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (APLA) at Auburn University, a comprehensive land-grant and research institution, is seeking a one year (nine month/two semester) non-tenure track visiting position for an appointment in the Landscape Architecture Programs commencing August 2024.

The Auburn Landscape Architecture Programs are research-informed, design-led programs dedicated to training quality designers, addressing contemporary issues, and participating in critical landscape discourse. We offer both an undergraduate degree (BLA) and a graduate degree (MLA). Grounded in the state of Alabama, we focus attention on places where the richness, complexity, and messiness of landscape is prominently felt, including post-industrial cities, infrastructural landscapes, rural landscapes, and coasts. Our curriculum places special emphasis on practices of fieldwork, landscape advocacy, and design research. At the end of both the undergraduate and graduate programs, students have the opportunity to work within the Alabama Lab, our design research lab.

Job Description Summary

The Landscape Architecture Programs seek a candidate with a strong interest in teaching both design studios and seminar courses. Candidates should have the capacity to teach at least some portion of: a) our core studio sequences (Studio I-IV and Workshop I-II in the BLA program; Studio I-IV in the MLA program and b) our core subject tracks (construction; dynamic systems; graphic studies; history, theory, and practice; plants). There may also be opportunities to teach elective seminars or advanced studios within the Alabama Lab.

Regardless of the candidate’s scholarly focus, responsibilities of the appointment include teaching, service, and research. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to maintain an active scholarly program disseminated through appropriate disciplinary venues. APLA faculty engage in and are supported in a broad range of formats for research and creative work.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a Master of Landscape Architecture degree, or a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture plus a terminal degree in a related field, at the time employment begins. Excellent interpersonal skills are required. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time this position is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Desired qualifications include: evidence of outstanding design skills, a focus on beginning design instruction, experience with contemporary drawing and modeling techniques (such as analog media, Rhino, Grasshopper, ArcGIS, or digital fabrication), experience in professional practice, experience in teaching, professional registration, and/or advanced degrees in Landscape Architecture or related fields. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will have a strong design philosophy grounded in contemporary practice and will have a track record of investigating contemporary issues through techniques that translate to a design studio setting. We strongly encourage candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our academic community to apply.

Required online submission materials include 1) a letter of interest including delineation of pedagogical and research interests; 2) a current curriculum vitae; 3) digital portfolio illustrating the candidate’s scholarly/creative work and (where applicable) examples of work illustrating prior teaching experience; 4) names, email addresses, and telephone numbers of three (3) current references.

Applicants must apply online at: https://www.auemployment.com/postings/43448

Review of applications will begin on 22 April 2024, and will continue until the position is filled.
