The Pomona College Department of Theatre invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Scenic or Lighting Design. This is a full-time, 1-year, non-tenure-track, term position. The individual holding the position is expected to teach 4 courses per academic year which, depending on areas of specialty, could include: Intro to Lighting Design, Intro to Set Design, Intro to Design, Intro to Technical Theatre, Lighting Tech, or a CAD course as well as designing for one departmental show each academic year. A successful candidate would have experience in instructing students in new digital technologies and be abreast of current trends and practices within the field.
This faculty member will also supervise independent studies and/or senior projects in design as the need arises. While there is no expectation of ongoing scholarship or professional work outside the Department, such activities are encouraged as long as the individual clearly understands the full-time nature of the position and the expectation of advising students and participating actively in the life of the Department.
An M.F.A. and/or Ph.D. in Theatre Arts is required. Teaching experience at the college level and a significant body of professional work outside of academe are greatly preferred. The candidate must understand the goals of theatre education within the liberal arts mission of the College and embody these goals in their teaching. Pomona College, the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, is a highly selective liberal arts college attracting a diverse, national and international student body. As part of our drive towards inclusive excellence in the classroom, the department seeks to create a supportive community for all students. We are particularly interested in artist/scholars whose pedagogy, creative activity, and professional outlook uplifts diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion and who has experience working with diverse student populations.
To apply, please send: a cover letter; curriculum vitae; 3 references; and 2 brief statements, one addressing the candidate’s teaching philosophy and one addressing the candidate’s experiences in working with students from diverse backgrounds and advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
