Tufts Program in Architectural Studies in the History of Art and Architecture Department seeks a highly qualified professional to offer undergraduate level instruction with an emphasis on design, starting September 2023.

The position of Professor of the Practice is intended for individuals pursuing careers in the architectural profession who view teaching as an integral part of their practice. In addition to having had recent experience teaching at the undergraduate level, the candidate is expected to have made creative contributions to the field of architectural design. The publication of continued research, and/ or professional achievements is expected. Priority will be given to practitioners whose work critically addresses issues of race, immigration, globalization, and/or the environment.

Beyond teaching studio courses, the professor of the practice is also required to teach seminars on topics relevant to architectural practice. . Examples of potential seminars include the history and changing nature of the architectural profession, and an introduction to the history and techniques of representation. Department faculty are expected to teach a 2:2 load of courses.

The professor of the practice will also contribute to the culture of the program by participating in the planning of public and student-centered events. Academic advising and participation in department service activities is expected.

 

Qualifications

Applicants are required to hold a masters level degree in Architecture and/or a PhD in architecture history, design, or a closely related field. Preference is given to professionals who maintain a design practice. Creative contributions to the field through both scholarship and/or design are essential to effective teaching over time. The publication of research, and professional achievements is expected.
