Job Description:

The Film Program in the Department of the Arts at the American University in Cairo seeks a specialist in film studies. This is a full-time, tenure track position with competitive salary and benefits; it is also an open position (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) of Film, with rank determined by the candidate's qualifications. Prior university or professional-level teaching experience is preferred. The position begins in the Spring of 2022.


The successful candidate will show evidence of excellence in teaching and a clear evidence and/or potential for research and publication. Candidates should have a completed PhD in the areas of Film Studies, Media Studies, Communication or related fields.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to contribute to a fast developing Film program which combines strong theoretical film studies foundation, with dynamic basis of practical filmmaking skills. The program is located in one of the most dynamic, and oldest 'film cities' in the world.

The successful candidate will be able to situate film in its wider social, industrial, and economic contexts. Preference will be given to researchers whose work engages film within social, ideological, industrial, institutional, or audience and reception studies context.

The candidate should be able to teach foundational courses in film studies, as well as intermediary and senior courses that include the areas of film theory, women and film, Hollywood cinema, world cinemas, cinema history. She/he will be expected to teach the required full-time teaching load of three courses per semester, continue their research work, and provide service to the program and to the university.
