Departmental Overview

Physical and Environmental Planning, part of the Capital Strategies team, has a unique role in influencing the physical growth of the campus. It works with community partners, including students, residents, and business owners to ensure campus projects are informed by existing context and to address concerns with new and existing development. It also maintains relationships with the City of Berkeley to align planning efforts affecting the built environment. This position will lead the development of short and long range campus development plans to support the needs of campus stakeholders and will manage multidisciplinary consultant teams in this effort.


Public Outreach:
  • Represents campus heritage and landscape planning and issues at campus and community meetings.
  • Inspires and guides investment in the campus landscape.
  • Resolves issues/problems requiring specialized knowledge and is widely recognized and consulted by campus staff for their expert knowledge in landscape architecture.
  • Performs organizational, campus and administrative activities not directly relating to projects.

Long Range Campus Planning:
  • Ensures campus landscape and open space projects support applicable policies and practices adopted in the Campus Landscape Master Plan and Heritage Plan.
  • Leads the planning and organization of objectives and long-range programs for the care and improvement of the campus physical environment, including but not limited to: landscape and grounds planning; design, construction and operations; protection and promotion of tree and shrub diversity; coordination of outdoor art, signage/wayfinding and landscape furniture.
  • As directed by the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Campus Architect, prepares, updates and executes the campus Landscape Master Plan and directs the development of site-specific development guidelines.
  • Develops, coordinates and implements programs and services, including CEQA processes, in support of campus landscape settings
  • Responsible for all aspects of the design and construction process for campus landscape projects.

Project Management:
  • Directly manages campus landscape projects as the designated Project Manager.
  • Establishes project milestones and schedules, prepares cost estimates, functional studies, construction plans and specifications and monitors for adherence to master plans, budgets and schedules.
  • Develops, coordinates and implements programs and services in support of campus landscape settings
  • Resolves issues/problems requiring specialized knowledge and is widely recognized and consulted by campus staff for expert knowledge in landscape architecture.

Technical Expert:
  • Serves as technical expert and provides advice and guidance to all levels of campus management relating to landscape architecture.
  • Responsible for the design, implementation and coordination of complex technical systems, programs, or other customized construction activities relating to campus landscape settings including areas of emerging technology.

Required Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge in landscape architecture
  • Experience working with and managing complex urban design and master planning projects, environmental planning studies and facility design projects from concept to completion.
  • Experience with CEQA/NEPA and other environmental planning processes, particularly as implemented within the UC system and/or demonstrated ability to learn.
  • Expert written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including expert level political acumen and negotiation skills.
  • Expert knowledge of design and construction, contract administration and California Building Codes, including expert understanding of industry practices or highly specialized and critical disciplines.
  • Advanced knowledge of the campus, including its architectural history, infrastructure, rules, regulations, policies and short and long range strategic plans, short and long range development plans, and current, on-going and future design and construction plans and/or equivalent experience/knowledge.
  • Expert analytical, organizational, project management and problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture, engineering, urban design, city planning or architecture, and/or equivalent training/experience.
  • Registered California Landscape Architect or eligible to achieve licensure within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree preferred and/or equivalent training/experience.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
