The Department of Design at Brigham Young University is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, continuing-status professorial faculty position in Illustration, beginning Winter Semester 2021. The position may also be filled with a visiting faculty. The Illustration Area consists of four full-time faculty and offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and participates in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design. A Master of Fine Arts degree in Illustration or another appropriate discipline is required. Teaching experience at the college/university level is strongly preferred. Candidates with professional experience in motion, interactive, concept design or other contemporary digital illustration markets are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: An ideal candidate would present a portfolio showing evidence of innovative thinking, appealing visual narratives, and the ability to solve visual communication problems through individual, creative illustration practice. Significant abilities in composition, design, color theory, observational drawing, and a strong understanding of the structure and design of the human form should be evident. New and evolving areas of the field such as motion, interaction, entertainment design and creative entrepreneurship would also be of interest. The successful candidate must be able to present and explain difficult visual concepts effectively, conduct studio demonstrations in a variety of media and methods, and individually mentor students in their educational and professional development. Any applicant should be able to communicate with students and collaborate with colleagues in a collegial manner.

Responsibilities: Teaching assignments may include introductory-to-advanced Illustration courses in digital and traditional media, drawing, and senior portfolio development. Depending on the candidate’s creative focus and professional experience, other teaching assignments may include Life Drawing, Concept Design, Environment Design, Motion, Illustration history, or other specialized subjects.

Additional responsibilities include advising senior capstone and other mentored student projects, curriculum development, committee work, administrative assignments and other regular service to the department, university, community, and profession. Full-time faculty are expected to help develop career opportunities for graduates and enhance the image of the department, college, and university. Illustration faculty are also expected to maintain an active record of scholarly creative activity, with a focus on working in major Illustration markets. Scholarly efforts may include research, publication, and/or creative work in Illustration.
