About the opportunity

The Design Lab explores the interactions between digital technologies and people, and the role of design for innovation, both within the built environment and beyond. As design researchers, we study how the world can be changed and shaped through design, applying human-centred methods to imagine possible futures with a range of economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits. Our areas of research span interaction design, computational creativity, design innovation, designing for health and well-being, digital place-making, and urban data science.

We are looking to appoint an Associate Professor in Design with an established track record that combines design and advanced manufacturing (e.g. integrated product design, strategic product design, product design engineering, product design management) to further our research and teaching agenda. We are specifically interested in applicants, who have a deep understanding of, practical experience in and/or background in design innovation, strategic design, product design and design thinking.

As the successful applicant you will:

  • develop and implement an original, innovative and high-impact research program
  • advise and supervise higher-degree research students,
  • design and deliver units of study at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including in the Master of Design and the Major in Design,
  • inform and contribute to the strategic development of new teaching programs
  • engage and collaborate with industry, your research discipline and the broader community, and
  • support and work with staff and students from a wide range of cultural, social and professional backgrounds.

About you

  • a PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline
  • a national or international reputation in design-led research and deep knowledge of design research methods and methodologies, evidenced through publications in high impact, international, peer-reviewed research outputs and competitive research grants
  • a sustained record of excellence in teaching design, including experience with design studios, as evidenced through student outcomes, impact on student learning and awards/prizes
  • a wide network of relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the discipline, school and University
  • experience in leading teams for design research projects and teaching programs, including supervising or mentoring towards success
  • demonstrated experience communicating across a range of media and forums to expert and non-expert audiences.
  • a track record of attracting and supervising high-quality PhD candidates
  • interest and experience in developing collaborative opportunities for cross-disciplinary teaching and research across the diverse disciplines represented in the School and the wider University.

From the appointment of its first Chair in 1918, the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, attracting the highest quality applicants in Australia.
