Summary:

The Utah Valley University Department of Music invites applications for a one-year Lecturer of Commercial Music position beginning August 2021. The successful candidate will be an insightful and engaging teacher, composer/arranger, and performer who cultivates and sustains a rigorous learning environment. Duties of this position include teaching courses in music technology, recording studio techniques, composition, scoring/arranging, and other courses assigned by the department which could include private instruction, aural skills, or other classes depending on the candidate's qualifications and needs of the department.

The Department of Music includes 275 undergraduate students pursuing commercial, education, and music performance degrees with seventeen full-time faculty and thirty adjunct instructors. The department is a unit within the School of the Arts and is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. In January 2019 the School of the Arts opened the stunning Noorda Center for the Performing Arts, which houses classroom, rehearsal, studio, and performance spaces, including a state-of-the-art 900-seat concert hall. The Noorda is home to a robust concert season from School of the Arts student and faculty performers as well as an extensive professional performing arts series. With over 40,000 students, Utah Valley University is the largest university in Utah.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Masters degree and extensive professional industry experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Significant professional experience within the music industry as a performer, arranger, composer, or producer.
  • Experience with studio facility management.
  • Expertise with commercial music and studio software platforms.
  • Competence in the use of academic course management systems (Canvas).
  • Ability to engage students in learning opportunities on campus and in the community.
  • Skills in assisting counselors and department chairs in maintaining an


effective program.
  • Ability to communicate (written and oral) with a wide variety of students, faculty, and others.
  • Ability to supervise students.
  • Ability to explain and demonstrate commercial music skills in a compelling and instructive manner.
  • Ability to work well with students of varying abilities.
  • Ability to assess student learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to rhythm section performers with prior university teaching experience.

Physical Requirements:

Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment.
