Position Description
The School of Visual Arts at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning in August 2021. The Visual Communication (graphic design) program seeks candidates who share our mission to provide design education within a student-centric learning environment that emphasizes excellence in teaching, research and service to the community.

The Visual Communication program emphasizes a conceptual yet practical approach to design problem solving. The responsibilities of the position include working with area faculty to develop and maintain curriculum that is committed to creative and innovative approaches to graphic design education. Faculty will teach undergraduate and graduate design courses with a focus on new and emerging technologies as related to visual communication. The candidate should demonstrate a rigorous research and/or creative activity agenda that explores opportunities for applied and/or theoretical research in graphic design. The individual should maintain a research/creative agenda that attracts and mentors students at all levels. Service responsibilities are expected at the program, school, college, university and professional levels. Salary commensurate with experience.

About the OU School of Visual Arts: Founded in 1915, the school attracts highly qualified and talented students seeking to study in the program areas of Studio Art; Art, Technology and Culture; Visual Communication; and Art History. The faculty is made up of nationally recognized artists and scholars who promote a positive atmosphere contributing to creative activities and scholarship.  In addition to its on-campus facilities, the school also has access to a year-round study abroad programs in Arezzo, Italy. 

  • The school has 28 full-time faculty who mentor over 250 undergraduate and graduate levels art majors.  
  • The school’s facilities include the Fred Jones Jr. Art Center, The Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West, and the off-campus OU School of Visual Arts Annex, which houses graduate student and faculty studios.
  • The OU School of Visual Arts is the only institution in the state to offer a graduate degree in art history at both the master’s and doctoral levels.
  • The school frequently partners with the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art which boasts a nearly 16,000-object permanent collection.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must hold a terminal degree in Visual Communication/Graphic Design or equivalent design degree (MFA, MSD Masters in Design, MVCD Masters Visual Communication Design, PhD in Design)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in graphic design
  • 1-3 years of university/college teaching experience at various levels of design
  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of emerging technologies (UI, UX, web, app, experiential graphic design (EGD), motion, and interactive design) related to the field of design
  • Demonstrate and articulate a vision for the future of design education
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and collaborate with a diverse faculty across the school
