Lecturer - Media Studies - College of Letters & Science
The Media Studies Program at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach Media Studies courses should an opening arise during the academic year or summer session. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 33% to 100% during the academic year, while summer appointments start at 8.5%.
Originating from a liberal arts tradition, the Media Studies major focuses on mass media's historical and theoretical components. Instructors are primarily concerned with promoting an understanding of the origins of contemporary media and helping students assess the roles and impact of the mass media on modern life, rather than developing specific media production skills. Temporary lecturers will teach or co-teach one or more Media Studies courses, including:
- the prerequisite Introduction to Media Studies,
- a Research Methods course,
- a core course (Media History, Media Theories and Processes, or Media and Democracy),
- or an upper-division elective (Special Topics in Media Studies, History, Specialization in a Medium like film or digital media, or Theory and Application like Media and Politics)

Teaching a Media Studies course includes holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials, and maintaining a course website.
Due to COVID 19, UC Berkeley began the academic year with fully remote instruction. Depending on public health conditions, the need for remote education and virtual classrooms may continue. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches to develop asynchronous instructional materials, foster student-to-student interaction, and reimagine assignments and exams for a remote format.
Basic qualifications (at time of application): must have an advanced degree or be enrolled in an advanced degree program at the time of application.
Additional qualifications (by start date): Completion of advanced degree or an equivalent international degree. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications: A Ph.D. or equivalent international degree in Communications/Media Studies, or a related field. Expertise and college level teaching experience in ethnicity/race, gender/sexuality, international media, Internet/social media, research methods, television, advertising, or film is desirable.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC-AFT.
