The School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) seeks a dynamic and accomplished faculty member in architecture, with expertise in architectural design and professional practice. The school seeks candidates who can demonstrate strong teaching abilities and demonstrated excellence in studio instruction, as well as emerging or established scholarship and design inquiry that exhibits an in-depth understanding of architectural design, practice, and collaboration with the broader professional and architectural communities. This appointment will begin in Fall 2020 and will be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor.
The School of Architecture offers a pre-professional Bachelor of Environmental Design (BEnvD) program, a professional Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program. and a NAAB-accredited professional Doctor of Architecture (DArch) degree. It provides the successful candidate with a unique institutional context recognized for its Hawaii, Asia-Pacific, and global design research/ projects, emphasizing the distinct social and environmental requirements and technical challenges of tropical environments. The school and university embrace a collaborative, integrated approach to improving built environments through a strong commitment to design excellence, sustainability, professional practice, and applied research.

Duties and Responsibilities:
This full-time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor includes responsibilities for teaching, research, creative work, and service. The School of Architecture seeks candidates who can help advance and strengthen the curriculum and focus of the BEnvD & DArch programs and contribute the delivery of MLA program. With the required specialization in architecture, desired expertise includes but is not limited to architectural design and professional practice; affordable housing; community design. The school seeks candidates who will complement the skills of the faculty at the School of Architecture.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate architecture design studios, design theory, architectural practice and related coursework. The candidate should be able to direct our existing Praxis program, which would require closely monitoring internships that are integral to our graduate degree program and coordinate the NCARB Architectural Experience Program (AXP).
Candidates must have a minimum of a professional Master of Architecture (MArch) degree. Additionally, before application for tenure, documentation of a professional license to practice architecture is required of candidates who do not hold a PhD. Applicants must demonstrate excellent design, communication and collaboration skills; the ability to maintain a vigorous program of research and publication; and a strong record of scholarship or professional practice; and demonstrated teaching excellence.
The school especially welcomes candidates with a professional license to practice architecture, or additional professional or post-professional degree(s) in architecture, and/or a PhD in architecture from an established doctoral program. Preference will be given to applicants with an established record of teaching experience, as well as peer-reviewed built or creative work or scholarship in architectural design and professional practice.
