Faculty - Assistant Professor Ballroom Dance

Summary:

Utah Valley University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Ballroom Dance to join our faculty in the Department of Dance. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and skilled teacher and creative artist, able to design and teach assigned courses in all levels of Ballroom Dance technique, theory, teaching methods, choreography, and at least one of the following Orientation for Dance, Dance as an Art Form, Jazz, or Dance Conditioning. The candidate will also choreograph, direct, and mentor students in Ballroom Dance performing groups.

The Department of Dance offers BS degrees in Ballroom Dance and Dance Education, BFA degrees in Ballet and Modern/Contemporary Dance, and an AA degree. Utah Valley University is a large and rapidly-expanding regional teaching institution located in Orem, Utah. The School of the Arts has over 1700 students enrolled in over 20 programs, making it one of the largest arts schools/colleges in the state. In March 2019 the School of the Arts celebrated the ribbon cutting on the new Noorda Center for the Performing Arts, which houses academic performance seasons as well as a professional performing arts series. In its inaugural season, the Noorda will host guests such as Bernadette Peters, Audra McDonald, Aquila Theatre, Diavolo Dance Company, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and a new musical theatre work intended for transfer to Broadway in 2020.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with MFA earned degree in dance. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Teach all levels of Ballroom Dance choreography, theory, and technique, including International Style and American Style, and at least one of the following Orientation for Dance, Dance as an Art Form, or Dance Conditioning.
Experience with student participation, supervision, and coordination of competitive Ballroom Dance events.
Experience in dance production and performances.
Plan, prepare, and follow an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught. Prepare instructional materials. Instruct and supervise groups and individuals in classroom/labs/rehearsals. Advise and mentor students. Direct student performing groups. Maintain office hours. Assist in recruitment, advisement, and placement. Evaluate instruction and learning by means of written, oral, practical and performance tests.
Ability to create original Ballroom choreography for competitions and concert performances. The ability to teach and coach International Style and American Style Ballroom Dance technique and choreography. Experience planning and coordinating concerts, competitions, and community outreach. Experience planning and working within a production budget. The ability to keep abreast of new development trends and techniques through participation in workshop seminars, actual work experience, and exchange programs with business and industry to maintain skills, state of the art, and knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited university with a MFA in Dance or a combination of education and professional experience in a relative field (ballroom dance performance, DanceSport competition, ballroom dance choreography, and classroom instruction) totaling 6 years. Must be able to teach courses outside of the ballroom-specific curriculum such as Orientation to Dance and Dance as an Art Form.

Physical Requirements:

Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment.
