Department Chair, Associate/Full Professor
The Department of Art in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University invites applications for the position of full-time department chairperson with associate/full professorship starting July 1, 2021.
The department offers both B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees with a strong liberal arts component and enjoys a close relationship with Cornell’s Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art and diverse academic units across the university. Art faculty and students have access to substantial production facilities in the college as well as to the resources of a major research university. The department also offers semester-long undergraduate programs in both New York City and Rome.
The Department of Art has recently implemented significant curricular changes aimed at further encouraging the cross-disciplinary practices among our students and faculty. It is the vitality of such linkages that provide the Department of Art at Cornell with its ambitions and inspiration to create an environment where the artistic output of its students and faculty have lasting effect in the world.
We seek an accomplished and recognized artist, curator, and/or critical practitioner who will welcome the opportunity to further empower our community in their research and practice. The successful candidate should have considerable experience in visionary and collaborative leadership and advocacy within the academic setting. With a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the chairperson will have the opportunity to lead and inspire the department’s development, evolution, and pedagogy. The chair is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the department’s academic programs, budgets, and facilities, working with the department manager to ensure a workplace that is supportive of faculty, staff, and students. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the chair works in close collaboration with the college dean as well as with the program directors and the department faculty. Other responsibilities include teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs, developing topical seminars, and participating in related departmental and university service such as admissions, curriculum development, student advising, and recruiting and mentoring junior faculty.
The position requires a master of fine arts or other terminal degree in a related field. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The deadline to apply is January 4, 2021. The new department chair appointment will begin July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will undergo an expedited review process for indefinite tenure as a departmental faculty member at the associate or full professor level; whereas the appointment to the chair position is for 3 years with the possibility of being renewed for an additional 3-year term.
