Job Description

The Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for two faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) beginning in August 2023. LSU is located in Baton Rouge, the state’s capital, and is Louisiana’s flagship university. Our unique and rich multi-cultural location – on the Mississippi River near the Atchafalaya River Basin and the Gulf of Mexico – provides many opportunities for innovative studio investigations, scholarly activities, and funded projects in landscape architecture, regional planning, and applied research related to water management, environmental sustainability, cultural landscapes and historic preservation, environmental policy and sustainability, resource stewardship, and disaster recovery/mitigation.

We seek candidates with diverse interests, teaching experience, a defined research agenda, and a combination of expertise (including professional practice) applicable to undergraduate/graduate teaching in areas of design studio, introductory design, construction technology, plants/ecology, and representation. Candidates should have at least one degree in landscape architecture with a terminal degree in landscape architecture or an allied discipline.

Context and Opportunities

LSU has a rich and unique campus environment, and with a community of approximately 35,000 students, LSU is one of America’s most beautiful educational environments. As one of the nation's most prestigious flagship universities, LSU has been a world leader in research and innovation for more than 160 years. It is a top-tier research powerhouse and among the elite 1% of universities in the U.S. LSU is one of the few universities with land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant status. We believe diversity, equity, and inclusion enrich the educational experience of our students, faculty, and staff, and are necessary to prepare all people to thrive personally and professionally in a global society. Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture (RRSLA) aims to attract and support a diverse faculty and student body.

RRSLA is committed to expanding excellence in landscape architectural education through theory and practice, innovation, critical thinking, and iterative making rooted in the context of the American South. The blend of critical thinking, design, and technical expertise has created a legacy of excellence and desirable graduates. We are located within LSU's College of Art and Design and offer BLA and MLA degrees. The College offers degrees in architecture, art history, studio art, and interior design and recently inaugurated a multi-disciplinary Doctor of Design degree with faculty from art history, architecture, and landscape architecture. You will find talented faculty in the College with kindred spirits to enrich your aspirations. The School has approximately 120 undergraduate and graduate students, and 12 full-time faculty, supported by an endowed visiting chair.

The School offers numerous off-campus experiences, including international and national internships, community service, and both elective and required international and domestic field trips. Housed within the College are the VizLab and the Fab Factory, with state-of-the-art 3D printers, CNC routers, plasma cutters, and laser cutters. The CEDS (Coastal Environmental Design Studio) supports teaching and research within the College and serves Louisiana and Gulf Coast communities through investigations related to coastal issues. Other resources include LSU's 16-acre Hilltop Arboretum, a laboratory of native plants and a venue for the School and community, and Hill Memorial Library, LSU’s special collections of regional, cultural, and environmental archives. We maintain an extensive and loyal alumni network that generates support for the School’s programs and internships/jobs for our graduates.
