The School of Art in the Herberger Institute of Art and Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks to hire a Fashion Instructor for a full-time one year appointment beginning August 2019.

About the School of Art
Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States, and situated in the Sonoran Desert, the school supports a broad range of art practice and inquiry. Programs within the School of Art lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art with concentrations in art history, art studies, museum studies, fashion; an online BA in art history; Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art with concentrations in art education, drawing/painting, ceramics, fibers, intermedia, photography, printmaking, sculpture/metals/woods; Master of Arts (MA) in Art with concentrations in art history or art education; and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art. In addition, the school participates in the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in Design, Environment and the Arts housed within the Herberger Institute. With several nationally ranked programs and one of the largest comprehensive art programs in a public research university in the United States, the ASU School of Art plays a prominent role within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and is located in both Tempe and downtown Phoenix.

The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate fashion design related courses including apparel construction and patternmaking and will lead capstone experiences in the School of Art’s fashion program. The candidate will maintain professional and academic expertise in the field of fashion and participate in undergraduate curriculum development.

Required Qualifications

  • MFA in fashion or equivalent terminal degree
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience in fashion design
  • Proficiency in all aspects of fashion design including knowledge and experience in conceptual design, technical design and clothing construction including pattern drafting and design
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity in creative activity, teaching, and retention

Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated success in one or more of the following areas:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in fashion design technologies including Adobe Creative suites and computer applications such as Gerber, Optitex or Tuca Tec
  • Ability to support the running and maintenance of fashion design studio and computer lab
  • Ability to guide students through a range of capstone development projects including collection development and research based projects that foster critical thinking and problem solving
  • Demonstrate awareness and values of sustainable design on domestic and international levels.
  • Demonstrated record of professional experience, teaching and mentorship
