The Division of Experimental and Foundation Studies (EFS) at Rhode Island School of Design seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor in Drawing, with the appointment to begin fall 2022.

Rhode Island School of Design recognizes diversity and inclusivity as fundamental to its learning community and integral to an art and design education. The Division of Experimental and Foundation Studies seeks candidates whose lived experience, creative practice and/or teaching centers on historically underrepresented communities or marginalized practices (race, gender, first-generation to college, environmental justice). We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, scholarship, professional practice, and/or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

EFS invites applications from individuals with a developed drawing practice who are enthusiastic about teaching drawing to first-year students who will go on to major in one of sixteen art and design programs at RISD. Candidates may also work within and across other disciplines.

Required Qualifications
Applicants should have a terminal degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience, evidence of 2 years of teaching at the college level, and a strong record of creative work that includes drawing and ongoing professional achievement. The Division values the expanded field of drawing, including traditional and non-traditional methods.

Applicants should have a distinctive vision and pedagogical approach, and will be prepared to teach drawing as a vital experience for a range of disciplines and a diverse student body. They will be able to approach drawing from multiple directions: as a specific method of investigating visual and spatial phenomena, as a mode of speculation and inquiry, and as an essential activity intrinsic to all artists and designers. Strong interpersonal skills, clarity, generosity, and creativity in both personal work and teaching are essential. The individual should be prepared to develop syllabi and lead classes and critiques that model constructive, inclusive discussions, and that encourage students to grow creatively and intellectually.

Department /RISD Description
In Experimental and Foundation Studies, students enrolled in Drawing courses explore a variety of conceptual, abstract, and perceptually based approaches. Through an intensive focus on the language of drawing, students gain insights into the responsive and intellectual aspects of creative processes that are essential to visual thinking. Drawing is one of three programs (Spatial Dynamics, Drawing, and Design) comprising the studio curriculum for all 480 first-year undergraduate students at RISD. Each studio class meets one full day a week, in sections of approximately 20 students, with section groups preserved across programs.

Rhode Island School of Design is an undergraduate and graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,400 graduate and undergraduate students. RISD supports faculty professional practice with sabbaticals, pre-critical review leave, conference funds, and professional development grants. RISD has a critical review process, which is very similar to the tenure process. For more information about RISD, please visit www.risd.edu.

Faculty Responsibilities
Faculty in Experimental and Foundation Studies teach four courses a year, advise students, participate in curriculum development and other divisional activities and projects, serve on college committees, contribute to the vibrancy of the intellectual life of the college, and maintain active professional practices. While the primary responsibility is in teaching first-year students, faculty in Experimental and Foundation Studies may also teach upper-level courses. There are opportunities for this within the Drawing Concentration and the Computation, Technology, and Culture Concentration offered within the Division.
