Lecturer in Design Cultures

The call is open for a University Lecturer or Senior University Lecturer on the Aalto University lecture track. The position will begin as agreed, but latest in August 2023. The lectureship is full-time and, depending on the merits of the candidate, can be temporary (generally for 5 years) or permanent.

Your role and goals

The Design and Culture lectureship fulfils an important role in bringing critical, historical and contextual enquiry into the largely practice-oriented Department of Design. You will have an enthusiasm for and understanding of design practices while also bringing new perspectives to these through investigating and demonstrating their societal, economic, political and cultural contexts. You will be prepared to challenge orthodoxies regarding design cultures, supporting students in establishing independent and critical thinking. This will involve facilitating frameworks for learning, advising students through tutorial contact and undertaking curriculum development. As demonstrated through your teaching and research, you will understand global, regional and local forces, and their relationships, that generate design cultures.
You will be able to engage students in understanding the complex relationships of the production of design, the work of designers and the functions and significances of design in everyday life. You will also be able to demonstrate processes of historical change through examples. A particular advantage would be in being able to engage with core departmental research areas while being up-to-date with contemporary developments in design practices. You will be keen to engage a range of publics in critical thinking about design, including and beyond the academic community, through, for example, curation, publishing or events.

The post-holder will normally hold a doctoral degree in Design Culture Studies, Design History or a related discipline in the Humanities or Social Sciences where they can demonstrate a deep and rigorous understanding of design cultures. They will be expected to teach across the Department’s Majors at Bachelor's and Master’s level and, where appropriate, undertake doctoral advising. We are particularly interested in colleagues who have a facility for communicating and engaging with students in lively and accessible ways.
