The Department of Theater and Dance at Amherst College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in theatrical design at the rank of assistant professor to begin on July 1, 2023. Candidates for this position should have a primary expertise in scenic design and additional expertise in at least one other design area, such as costume design or lighting design.

In addition, close advising of senior honors projects is expected, as well as projects of other advanced-level students in coordination with our production program. The successful candidate will help to shape a liberal-arts oriented theater and dance curriculum in a department that emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Candidates must have a terminal degree (either an M.F.A. or a Ph.D.) in hand, or all requirements for the degree fulfilled by the start of the appointment. Professional experience as a designer is also required, as well as the ability to continue professional-level work in the field. Applicants are asked to submit electronically to the following: a cover
letter; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy, including philosophy of teaching a diverse student body; a detailed description of creative and research plans, including a sample portfolio of design work; as wells three confidential letters of recommendation. Applications received by January 1, 2023, will be assured full consideration; review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
