Professor of Housing Architecture
The call is open for all levels of the Aalto University tenure track system. The position will begin at the 1st of August 2021 or as agreed. The professorship is full-time and, depending on the positioning on the tenure track, with either a fixed-term or permanent contract. The professor leads the housing architecture teaching and research in the department of Architecture. In addition, the professor is responsible for directing and instructing the lecturer and other teaching staff in the field of the professorship. The focus of the professorship is on creating new visions, knowledge as well as developing tools and methods for housing architecture. Holistic understanding and knowledge of housing design, societal impacts, sustainability, history of residential architecture as well as current questions linked to housing and construction, are important aspects of the position. The professor of housing architecture is active in collaboration between the housing industry and organizations in the field.
Your role and goals
The tasks of the Professor of Housing architecture include teaching and research in the field as well as development and management work within the department. In addition, the role involves external fund raising and multidisciplinary collaboration. The professor will work in cooperation with the professors and other teaching staff of the department, with other schools in the Aalto University and related disciplines in other universities. The Housing architecture is part of the SPACE group within the department including Housing Architecture, Urban design and Urban planning, working actively together.
Developing and participating actively the international cooperation and networks as well as cooperating with Finnish universities are necessary parts of professor’s activities.
At the moment, the BA level courses are taught primarily in Finnish whilst MA and doctoral level studies primarily in English.
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the quality of the artistic or practice-based outcomes and/or their research and teaching merits, as well as academic leadership skills and activity in the scientific community. A Master’s Degree in Architecture is mandatory and a Doctoral Degree is highly valued.
lnternationally peer reviewed publications and participation in research projects and/or experience in housing design, international architectural publications or participation in housing development projects is valued. The successful candidate is expected to have broad knowledge about international housing research, design and policy, especially pertaining to the Nordic situation. The candidate is expected to be internationally networked and fluent in English. The position will require relocation to Finland for candidates not already located in the country.
