The Department of Design at Brigham Young University is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, continuing-status, interdisciplinary, professorial faculty position in Design Research, User Experience design & Digital Product Design, beginning Fall Semester 2021. The position may also be filled with a visiting faculty. The department consists of fourteen full-time faculty and offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration and Photography, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design.

A Master of Fine Arts degree in Design-related fields, a Master of Arts in User Experience or related fields, a Master of Science in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction Design or similar degrees, a Master of Business Administration in Design Thinking, Product Design, or Design Leadership and/or PhDs in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction and Design or Design Research is preferred. Candidates with extensive professional experience in user experience, digital product design, and design research are encouraged to apply. Teaching experience at the college/university level is preferred.

An ideal candidate would present a portfolio showing evidence of innovative thinking, appealing visual narratives, and the ability to solve interactive communication problems through collaborative user experience design and/or experimental work in the intersection of design and new technologies. Significant abilities in design, design thinking, design research, and design coding should be evident. Additional visual design work such as interface design is helpful.

Although not the primary focus of this hire, new and evolving areas of the field such as motion design, virtual or augmented reality would also be of interest. The successful candidate must be able to present and explain difficult visual and theoretical concepts effectively, conduct studio demonstrations in a variety of media and methods, and individually mentor students in their educational and professional development. Any applicant should be able to communicate with students and collaborate with colleagues in a collegial manner.

Teaching assignments include introductory-to-advanced courses in design research, user experience design, and digital product design. Depending on the candidate’s creative focus and professional experience, other teaching assignments may include foundational courses in design, critical studies or design theory, or other subjects according to the needs of the department.

Knowledge of current wireframing, prototyping, and other product design tools (such as Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD but not limited to these) is essential. Knowledge of fundamental coding languages as used in design projects is important (such as HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript). Mastery of general design software and technology such as the Adobe Creative Suite is important.

Additional responsibilities include advising senior capstone and other mentored student projects, curriculum development, committee work, administrative assignments, and other regular services to the department, university, community, and profession. Full-time faculty are expected to help develop career opportunities for graduates and enhance the image of the department, college, and university. Faculty are also expected to maintain an active record of scholarly creative activity with a focus on working in major media markets. Scholarly efforts may include research and writing, publication and/or creative work in major media markets.
