Teaching Assistant Professor of Costume Design and Technology Department of Theatre University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Position Description: The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the search for a Teaching Assistant Professor of Costume Design and Technology with a proposed start date of August 16, 2018. Teaching faculty positions contribute primarily to the educational mission of the university, with distinct responsibilities and opportunities for promotion and engagement within that mission. The Department of Theatre is committed to the continued professional and pedagogical growth of its teaching faculty. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track (specialized faculty) appointment on an academic year (nine-month) service basis paid over twelve months, with potential for renewal based on performance. Multi-year contracts typically follow promotion within this path.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in teaching Costume Design and Technology at the university level. An MFA or terminal degree is required. Special consideration will be given to those with experience in a range of disciplines and genres, including Theatre, Dance, Opera, Television, or Film. Experience with curriculum development and academic leadership is desirable. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, collaborative team at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois, a Tier One Research Institution. Minimum Qualifications: A terminal degree, record of professional work, and experience teaching undergraduate students are required. Effective organizational and communication skills as well as a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively are preferred, as is experience working with new methods of production and play-making as well as experience with students, performers, colleagues, and audiences from underrepresented groups. Preference will be accorded to candidates who are proficient in additional related areas such as draping and patterning, millinery, costume crafts, and/or wigs and makeup.

Duties: Teach major courses in BFA and MFA programs in Costume Design and Technology and engage in curriculum development, recruitment, artistic mentoring, academic advising, engagement, and creative contributions to the Theatre, Dance, and Opera season as needed. The successful candidate will be involved in the advisement of student costume design processes and/or costume technology projects. Opportunities for professional development and departmental creative work are available.

Rank and Salary: Teaching Assistant Professor, salary commensurate with experience. The position reports to the Head of the Department of Theatre and is affiliated with Design, Technology, and Management Faculty and Staff, jointly stewarded by the Department of Theatre and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
