    Qualification Details:
    The Department of Art and Art History, California State University, Chico seeks a digital studio artist for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting August 2020. We are looking for a faculty member exploring contemporary issues in a studio art context. The department is searching for a collaborative, energetic colleague who is committed to student success in our BA, BFA, and MFA programs.

    Minimum Qualifications The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a terminal degree in Digital Media Art or related studio art area, such as New Media Art, Transmedia Art, Art and Technology, Film and Video Art, or equivalent. Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than August 17, 2020.
    - Applicant should provide a demonstrated record of effective teaching at the college level for a minimum of two years.
    - Applicant’s exhibition record and professional achievement should reflect promise of significant achievement in the field and an active studio practice that engages contemporary issues.
    - The successful candidate should provide evidence of their commitment to or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds. This should be addressed in applicant’s statement of teaching philosophy.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    - Experience teaching at all levels of instruction including studio foundations and seminar classes for art majors focusing on contemporary issues.
    - Experience with curriculum and program development and experience integrating a broad variety of current digital tools and skills into studio foundations level coursework.
    - An understanding of art from an interdisciplinary perspective and experience teaching some or all of the
    following: Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling, 3D printing and digital fabrication (such as laser cutter, CNC, etc.), video art or other time-based media, motion graphics, animation, typography, digital painting/drawing/illustration, book arts, digital media installation, and other emerging platforms (such as VR, augmented reality, etc.).
    - Ability to teach in secondary studio areas outside primary assignment.
    - Experience overseeing and maintaining a digital lab of computers and related digital media equipment.

    Responsibilities: This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of undergraduate and graduate teaching, scholarship, and service. The successful candidate will teach digital art at all levels and will practice innovative digital art methods relevant to the field of contemporary art. Responsibilities include initiating programmatic changes in the Digital Art area, working with colleagues to integrate digital media skills and tools into studio foundations, maintaining the computers and equipment in the digital art lab in collaboration with IT Support Services, serving as a mentor on BFA and MFA committees, advising students, and applying for internal and external grants where appropriate. The candidate will maintain active involvement in creative research resulting in public exhibitions and engagement with a wide audience in and beyond the region. Commitment to collegiality and teamwork within the department, college, and university is essential. The successful applicant will teach a 3/3 course load, and teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

    The Department: The Department of Art and Art History is NASAD accredited. The Department offers BA options in Art Education, Art History and Art Studio; and a BFA program with options in Art Studio and Interior Architecture. An MA is offered in Art History and an MFA in Art Studio. The Department of Art and Art History faculty members are a dedicated group of artists and scholars deeply involved in art, pedagogy, and in bringing our work out of the classroom into our communities. Our students (32% Latinx, 41% White, 4% Asian, 4% African American, 5% multiracial) reflect the campus’s diversity. They push boundaries and produce reflective work for our galleries and other public venues that engage with contemporary issues. We have thirteen full-time faculty, a large part-time pool of faculty, and five staff. The studio areas are well equipped with labs for ceramics, drawing, digital media, glass, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Art History has strengths in Mesoamerican, Medieval, and Modern, with specialists in postcolonial and critical race studies, feminism and gender studies, structuralism and semiotics. Art Education has strengths in Cultural Diversity in Art Education and Japanese Pop Culture. An award winning learning/teaching center, The Ira Latour Visual Resources Center houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, videos, and digital images. Other important artistic teaching resources include the University Art Gallery, which presents exhibitions of regional- and nationally-based artists, and the Janet Turner Print Museum, which maintains an extensive permanent study collection. Chico is a town with a vibrant arts community. It is located three hours north of the Bay Area and one and a half hours north of Sacramento, offering easy access to major art activity.
