    Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory 


    The Department of Art + Art History at Florida International University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory to begin in Fall 2025.  


    The successful candidate will be a scholar with a significant record of research, publication, and teaching in the field of contemporary art theory and history. The individual will demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach to the study of art and visual culture, with expertise in global and diverse perspectives on contemporary art and the ability to become a significant voice in the rich transnational discourse in Miami. Experience with curatorial practice and the ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and critique with undergraduate and MFA students is expected. 


    Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of exceptional teaching, academic leadership experience or potential, and excellent organizational and communication skills. The successful candidate will provide evidence of a distinct and progressive vision for curriculum development that capitalizes upon the transformative capacity of contemporary art and design scholarship. 


    We are seeking enthusiastic applicants with wide-ranging intellectual and creative interests to complement and build upon our department’s existing capabilities. 


    Responsibilities: 



    • Maintain an active research agenda with a record of scholarly achievement in contemporary art history and theory, with a preference on Latin American/Caribbean art based on FIU’s mission to serve the diverse population of South Florida. 



    • Teach courses primarily in contemporary art history and theory, including undergraduate and graduate independent studies and thesis advising, as well as serving on MFA committees. 



    • Initial teaching responsibilities include five undergraduate and/or graduate courses per year. 



    • Develop curricula emphasizing a diversity of theoretical and critical perspectives in contemporary art history and theory, particularly in the context of Latin American art. 



    • Mentor students and provide service to the department and university. 



    • Engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and interact with studio students during critiques and research-based collaborations. 



    • Contribute to the Foundations program or interdisciplinary initiatives within the university. 



    • Participate in curatorial initiatives, exhibitions, or programs that enhance the department’s engagement with contemporary art and the local/global art community. 


    Preferred Qualifications: 



    • Research expertise in Latin American/Caribbean contemporary art, including a strong publication record. 



    • Curatorial practice with exhibitions, collections, or public programs. 



    • University level experience collaborating with faculty on curriculum development and interdisciplinary initiatives. 



    • University level experience teaching and mentoring across a broad student population. 



    • Graduate level teaching and mentorship experience 


    Minimum Qualifications: 



    • PhD in art history, visual culture, or a related field by the start date of employment. 



    • Ability to engage in the theoretical and critical discourses of contemporary art in both research and teaching. 



    • College-level teaching experience beyond graduate school. 



    • Evidence of scholarship or creative practice that bridges academic and curatorial expertise.
