    [b]Assistant or Associate Professor in Design Formgiving[/b]

    The Department of Design at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture is seeking to strengthen its research and education excellence by hiring a new tenure track professor in Design formgiving. The position will be filled at either assistant or associate professor level in the Aalto University’s tenure track career system.With this new Design formgiving professorship, we aim to enhance academic expertise in design as a contemporary and unfolding formgiving practice. The position is centered on design as a creative and solution-oriented sensemaking in which the act of giving form to physical and digital objects, relationships, and processes hold a central place.  The position will also address the integration of formgiving with diverse layers of professional design practice, including strategic thinking, conceptions and representations of the end-users, design tools and processes, and contemporary production methods and technologies.

    [b]Your role and goals[/b]

    Aligned with Aalto University’s mission to shaping a sustainable future, the Design formgiving professorship is expected to make a significant contribution to the evolving and expanding field of design and to foster different cross-field collaborations. Questions of formgiving emerge in many areas of design research and practice. The ideal candidate will have an outstanding research profile and the capacity to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Potential areas of research and teaching may include the appropriation, exploration and generation of manifestations of new ideas, sensemaking in and through prototyping and formgiving, technologies, tools and techniques for formgiving, and the organizational positioning and implications of formgiving.  
    A successful candidate will have recorded experience and a high ambition in teaching design courses, and motivation to contribute to curriculum development including participating in updating the kind of formgiving competences needed in a rapidly changing world. Teaching responsibilities will include deepening the discussion on design formgiving in BA and in MA levels, and integrating design knowledge and design methods into both established and emerging design domains  In conjunction with research and teaching, the candidate is expected to have demonstrated ability to contribute to design practice and engage in the societal settings in which design takes place.

Depending on your profile, your main collaborators in the department are the members of the research groups and faculty connected to the BA programme in Design and Media, and MA programme in Collaborative and Industrial Design.
