The Department of Art at Tyler School of Art and Architecture invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning Fall, 2026. The successful candidate will serve as Program Head of the Glass Program.  We seek an accomplished artist and educator whose practice and teaching engage the evolving field of glass within contemporary art, design, craft, and material studies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate broad technical expertise, a commitment to inclusive pedagogy, leadership in sustainability, and an understanding of the international glass community, while contributing to our mission of academic excellence, innovative research, and inclusive education.

The Art Department encompasses a wide range of philosophies and practices, ranging from cutting-edge contemporary methods to historic processes, and is grounded in a philosophy of social commitment within the ever-evolving fields of hybrid practices for creative investigation and expression. The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of glass materials and processes with a demonstrated ability to position glass within contemporary art and craft discourses. Candidates who can expand beyond the institutional canon of glass to include a broader social, political, cultural, or artistic context are particularly desirable. The ideal candidate will be influential in shaping the future of the discipline. A professional exhibition record is required.

The successful candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching. The position requires teaching a variety of glass courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as evidence of successful experience with administration and program management, and leadership potential. The workload is comprised of teaching and instruction, and service to the program, department, and college. Position responsibilities also include mentoring students, serving on MFA thesis committees, engaging in curriculum development, contributing to department and program meetings, and participation in end-of-semester reviews with students. Presence on campus at least three days per week is expected. Since 1935, Tyler School of Art and Architecture has offered students the combination of a world-renowned faculty and the resources of Temple University, a large, urban research institution. Tyler’s programs encompass a wide range of areas in the study of art, design, art history, art education, architecture, and the built environment. In each program, students work in small learning communities, while also benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities, a rigorous curriculum, and a large, diverse campus community.

Philadelphia has deep artistic traditions, a wide range of cultural organizations, and a thriving contemporary art scene. Beyond Philadelphia, the city makes for an affordable and convenient home base to access other major cities with flourishing arts, culture, and architectural communities such as New York City and Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in glass across hot, cold, kiln, and flame working processes, with opportunities to teach interdisciplinary offerings aligned with Tyler’s revised BFA curriculum.


• Mentor BFA, MFA, and interdisciplinary graduate students, fostering critical inquiry and inclusive practices.


• Maintain an active record of creative research, exhibitions, publications, and professional activity at the national and international levels.


• Serve as Program Head of the Glass Program


• Contribute to the program’s leadership in sustainability and environmentally responsible making practices. 


• Participate in departmental, school, and university service and contribute to a culture of shared governance and collaboration.

Qualifications

Required:

• MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Glass or a related field, completed by the start date.


• Demonstrated record of excellence in creative practice and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.


• Evidence of innovative curriculum development and ability to teach across multiple glass processes and mediums.


• Experience with administration and program management, and leadership potential


• Commitment to equity, accessibility, mentorship, and inclusive pedagogy that supports diverse student populations.


• Active exhibition record and professional engagement demonstrating sustained creative research.


• Broad technical expertise across hot, cold, kiln, and flame-based processes, with the ability to connect traditional methods to contemporary and experimental practices.

Preferred:

• Experience leading interdisciplinary collaborations that bridge glass with other media, theory, and research fields.


• Demonstrated leadership in sustainability within studio practice, such as advancing environmentally conscious making, waste-stream research, or securing external funding for green initiatives.


• Evidence of community engagement, socially engaged practice, or collective/collaborative work that expands the field of glass.


• Demonstrated understanding of the international glass community, including its networks, residencies, symposia, and professional opportunities.


• National and international recognition through exhibitions, awards, residencies, publications, or invited lectures.


• Experience mentoring students toward professional success, including competitive residencies, fellowships, and academic or creative career placements.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
