The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), a national leader in visual arts and design education, is seeking applications for the full-time position of Assistant Professor in our Animation Department. The convergence of traditional and emerging technologies at KCAI is situated in programming that provides comprehensive instruction to students majoring in Animation, Interactive Arts, Filmmaking and Photography. The focus of the curriculum includes visual problem solving and preparation for careers in emerging uses of contemporary arts disciplines. Through the sharing of courses and curriculum this multi disciplinary department offers a rigorous course of study for students who intend to build interdisciplinary work through combined media, emerging technology and conceptual inquiry. The curriculum emphasizes visual literacy, theory and practice, presenting broad perspectives in art making throughout the program. Classes consist of lecture, critique, demonstration, screenings and research in directed studios.
The animation program provides a technical, visual, critical, and conceptual foundation for the education of artists, integrated with intensive studio, liberal arts, and professional practice opportunities offered by the Bachelor of Fine Arts curriculum.
Faculty and staff manage the facility and schedule a program of visiting artists, departmental exhibitions, scholarships and internships, outreach and recruiting activities, and external opportunities for student achievement.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
Candidates should have a professional artistic pursuit with a primary use of 3D technologies, and teaching experience with a strong commitment to college level visual arts education. The ideal candidate will be well versed in historical and contemporary aspects of art, theory, design, and research, with exceptional critical aptitude and able to address a broad perspective across contemporary image making with demonstrated competency digital image making technologies.
The philosophy of the major area of study is committed to the interrogation of the medium its history and relationship to culture, all instruction and critical feedback are delivered to that end. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical and theoretical foundation, as well as an expansive approach that embraces the changing role of images in society. The animation curriculum is closely aligned with that of filmmaking with sharing elective possibilities in sound and other related skill acquisition.
The position requires the capacity to develop curriculum and the implementation of elective offerings serving both the department and the college.
Candidates must possess an ability to instruct and advise students in developing a professional practice in the field of art and design. Excellent written and oral communication skills and a strong collaborative spirit for teamwork and service to the department, institution, and field are imperative.
An MFA and demonstrated professional achievement in the field with full-time college-level teaching experience required.
