of the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East)
Salary Grade A 16 BBesO
Reference Number: SMB-VAM-1-2018

Position start date is expected to be 1st of January 2019. In the case that the position is filled by an employee subject to a collective agreement, a salary corresponding to the position shall be paid.

The Vorderasiatisches Museum is located in the Pergamonmuseum. It ranks internationally alongside the Louvre, the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum as one of the most important collections of testimonies to the cultural history of the Ancient Near East outside of their countries of origin. In addition to the objects from the large German excavations in Mesopotamia, the unique architectural reconstructions such as, for example, the Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way of Babylon are a main focus of the collection, which is comprised of about 300,000 objects.

Area of responsibility:

The tasks of the Director include the scientific and organisational management of the museum. Furthermore, the Director undertakes curatorial responsibility for one section of the collection area at the Vorderasiatisches Museum.

The main focuses of the museum, alongside conservational care and exhibition of the collections, are above all on the scientific indexing, provenance research and bringing the holdings to the attention of the general public and making them digitally accessible.

The central task for the next few years will be the further planning and new arrangement of the museum with twice its current floor space in the course of the general renovation of the Pergamonmuseum. One main focus will be on the implementation of the user requirement "Unlocking Architectures – Communicating Cultures. Ancient Near Eastern Worlds in the Vorderasiatische Museum" and on the integration of the restored Tell Halaf collection.

To be appointed as the Head of the Vorderasiatisches Museum it is required that you have completed a scientific university degree in the subjects of Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology or Ancient Near Eastern Philology with a PhD. You are expected to possess a proven high level of expertise comprising the whole area from Anatolia to Iran as well as from Syria to Yemen, with a regional, chronological or systematic focus, and stretching chronologically from the Neolithic to the Late Period. We are looking for a person with leadership qualities who has qualified curatorial experience in practical museum work. Sound knowledge and experience in modern cultural, museum and scientific management, including proof of success in acquiring third-party funding, are necessary for this position. A special affinity for educational and communication concerns as well as good national and international networking are essential. A cooperative and integrative management style is expected as well as above-average conceptual and organisational skills, also in the area of applying for and implementing large interdisciplinary research projects. A very good command of English and French is necessary in addition to a good command of German.

Experience and knowledge of the area of archaeological fieldwork as well as experience in dealing with the planning and implementation of sizable museum projects – new arrangements, building projects – are desirable.

The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz is happy to accept applications from people of all nationalities. As an interdisciplinary cultural and research institution the SPK offers family-friendly working conditions and guarantees gender equality. Special consideration will be given to severely handicapped persons if other qualifications are the same.

It is possible in principle to fill the position with part-time employees.
