The Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position in Designed Objects, beginning in August of 2019. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.
The Designed Objects curriculum, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, focuses on the critical re-thinking of the object. Borrowing from industrial design as well as disciplines such as systems design, sculpture, furniture design, interaction design and design for research, the Designed Objects faculty teach students to use objects as a medium for social agency. Concerned with both professional competency within the field of product design and critical enquiry, the department promotes an expansive understanding of the production, consumption, analysis, and politics of objects.
The School offers a professional Master of Design degree in Designed Objects. The AIADO department also offers courses within the interdisciplinary BFA and MFA programs. Teaching within SAIC’s interdisciplinary curriculum includes collaborations with myriad departments including Sculpture, Ceramics, Fashion Design and others. Recent or ongoing projects include external partnerships with Sight Unseen, CB2, The University of Chicago, the Chicago Architecture Biennale and the Venice Architecture Biennale. Faculty in Designed Objects bring the theoretical, technological, material, social, and political into studio culture and teaching pedagogy. Full-time faculty in Designed Objects teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The faculty member will teach in areas that contribute to the general goals of the department as well as in their area of specialization, conduct research and/or practice in the area of design, and play an integral role in forging the future of the department. Full-time faculty participate in student advising, admissions events, committee work, and special projects, contribute to the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development, and participate in departmental administration and school governance.
A Master’s degree in design or other relevant field of study is preferred. Significant teaching experience is preferred. The department seeks candidates with a national and/or international profile who have a broad and critically expansive understanding of design within areas such as furniture design, interaction design, design for critique, or product design. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field of Designed Objects. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
