The Department of Theater and Dance at AMHERSTCOLLEGE invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in dance, beginning July 1, 2019. Given Amherst’s commitment to cultivating a challenging and inclusive educational environment, we seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring students representing a broad range of classes, genders, races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, and religions. The successful applicant will join a student-oriented department that emphasizes collaboration and the interdisciplinary nature of scholarship and artistic practice in a liberal arts setting.
The ideal candidate will be actively engaged in an artistic practice that reflects innovations in the field of contemporary dance. The teaching load is two courses per semester. The primary responsibilities of the position include teaching beginning to advanced modern/contemporary technique, courses in dance history and theory, and courses in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise, which could include (but are not limited to): fusion forms (approaches that combine modern dance with other dance traditions/vocabularies); interdisciplinary performance (dance and digital technologies, design, theater, etc.); and dance as it relates to other academic disciplines. An MFA (or PhD) in Dance and a strong record of professional experience are expected. Additional responsibilities include regularly creating new choreography for students, advising student theses, and requisite service responsibilities (advising, departmental meetings and serving on college committees). The successful candidate will also be expected to actively participate in the shared administration of the Five College Dance Department.
