Position Summary:

The University of Idaho's Art + Design program seeks applications for a full-time Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Painting & Drawing. The College of Art & Architecture welcomes a progressive and dedicated professional with a broad understanding of these disciplines to play an active role in the collaborative culture of our faculty. A successful candidate will engage with an interdisciplinary research program and faculty aligned with the University's long-term strategic goals. The candidate will provide general curriculum in Painting & Drawing, both contributing to our connective program educational needs, and further engaging in the mentoring of graduate students in our MFA program.

Context: Art + Design at the University of Idaho offers programming that focuses on Fine Art and Design supported by 9 full-time faculty and 2-3 part-time lecturers. It enrolls approximately 120 undergraduate majors and 12 graduate students.

As a program within the College of Art & Architecture (CAA), Art + Design offers courses that serve degree programs including BFA in Studio Art & Design, BA in Art, BS in Secondary Education/Art Degree, and MFA in Art as well as minors seeking other degrees in CAA. The University of Idaho, the land-grant university of the state of Idaho, is a residential campus of 12,000 students. The University is situated in the center of the town of Moscow, Idaho. Position Responsibilities

(70%) Teaching and Advising

Job Duties/Responsibilities: The Painting & Drawing position plays an integral role in supporting the BFA Studio Art & Design, BA Art, BS in Secondary Education/Art Degree, and MFA Art degrees. Duties of this 2-3 teaching load include coursework addressing a range of painting and drawing practices and support of Art + Design student portfolio development across disciplines. The faculty member will aid in the evolution of innovative Art + Design curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels, support students through academic advising and offering of discipline specific career advice, and function as a member of graduate committees. They will attend regular faculty meetings and contributes to the collegiality of the department.

(23%) Scholarship and Creative Activities

Job Duties/Responsibilities: Tenure-track faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda for future tenure consideration. This focused research program must follow at least one of the following models of creative scholarly validation:

  • Discovery (publication of historical, theoretical, artistic research, etc.)
  • Teaching/learning (scholarly writing, paper presentations relating to pedagogy)
  • Outreach/Application/Engagement (validated by peer reviewed publication)
  • Artistic Creativity (curation & exhibition record, publications of visual work)

(7%) Extramural Service and/or University Service & Leadership

Job Duties/Responsibilities: Faculty members contribute to the shared governance of university, college and/or department committees. They also provide support for CAA & UI outreach to participate in the land grant mission of the University of Idaho.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master of Fine Arts
2 full years of teaching experience at the university level beyond graduate teaching experience (please make this clear in application materials)
Evidence of a strong scholarly/exhibition record that will lead to promotion and tenure at a research institution
Demonstrates knowledge of contemporary issues in Painting & Drawing
Demonstrates knowledge of both contemporary and traditional methodologies to cover course content at all levels of Painting & Drawing Courses
Expresses strong, critical awareness of challenges faced by entry level arts professionals
Ability to work collaboratively with and in support of other Art + Design disciplines
Commitment to working in a culturally diverse environment

Preferred Qualifications:

Commitment to engaging, innovative pedagogy in Painting & Drawing
3 years or more teaching experience at college level beyond graduate teaching experience
Ability to teach other Art + Design coursework
