The Emergent Digital Practices program brings together art, design, media, culture and technology studies in a hands-on, collaborative environment. Technology links academic disciplines with professional fields and joins shared communities with our personal lives in many new and exciting ways. To understand and explore this landscape, we infuse the digital practices of making and writing with contemporary critical approaches to cultural technologies, media philosophy, the critique and investigation of electronic and new media arts, and studies in science fiction, trans-global politics and science.

Position Summary

The Emergent Digital Practices program is accepting applications for a non-tenure track, one-year Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor in Emergent Digital Practices. This appointment is for one year with the possibility to extend for an additional year, contingent on continued need and funding. EDP especially encourages applications from women, minorities, members of the LBGT community, people with disabilities and veterans. We are looking for candidates with capabilities to teach across our foundations courses in as many of the following areas as possible: Digital Imaging, Time-based Media and Creative Coding. An MFA or equivalent is required. We seek an artist/scholar who is creatively and critically engaged in the practices and discourses of New Media. We are especially interested in candidates who are creative coders and visual artists. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for excellent teaching and will have a creative practice utilizing digital tools. Responsibilities of the position include teaching seven 10-week classes per year and additional short workshops in a program that serves undergraduate majors and minors, as well as MFA and MA graduate students in Emergent Digital Practices. The courses would include undergraduate foundation-level studio courses, an upper level elective studio tied to the practice of the candidate and/or a critically oriented class connected to discourses in Emergent Media in the interest/specialty or the candidate. Classes are taught in well-equipped Mac studios and several state-of-the-art creative and performative spaces. Begin fall 2018. Essential Functions

Teach seven courses in the Emergent Digital Practices Program.
These include: up to five sections in our foundation sequence: EDPX 2000 Imaging, EDPX 2400 Time, and/or EDPX 2100 Coding; and two or more sections of upper division classes within their area of specialty including teaching digital cultures courses (broadly defined as history, art, internet, and other subcultures in the digital realm).
A series of short workshops will be taught throughout the year to EDP students.
The successful applicant will be required to teach at multiple levels of a curriculum that includes a BA, BFA, MA, and MFA.
Capture student outcomes in Canvas Learning Management System.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate will demonstrate through their portfolio of works an understanding of, and experience creating, experimental digital art.
For Imaging: creation and manipulation of images with raster and vector image editing software packages.
We have adopted and teach with Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer.
Experience with other vector and raster software packages will be helpful but not required.
For Time-based media: creation and manipulation of sequences of images, audio, transitions, and basic video/audio editing.
We have adopted and teach with Final Cut Pro and Audacity.
For Coding: scope and sequence appropriate for creative coding leading up to and including the manipulation of variables, arrays, classes and objects.
We have adopted and teach with Processing and P5.Js.
For upper division classes: a portfolio of professional work that reflects experience in topic.

Required Qualifications

MFA or equivalent required at time of appointment and a professional creative practice utilizing digital tools.
Candidate must be able to teach in several of the following areas: the basics of bitmap & vector visual imaging using Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer, the foundations of time-based media, the fundamentals of creative coding using Processing, or P5.JS and web-based interactivity.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience teaching Digital Imaging in a higher education setting.
Previous experience teaching the foundations of Time-based media in a higher education setting.
Previous experience teaching the foundations of creative coding in a higher education setting.
