Assistant Professor – Dance

The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration seeks a dance specialist in African, African-American or Africa Diasporic dance. Expertise in dance forms may include hip-hop, African-inspired jazz and/or tap, Contemporary African Dance, dances from any region/country in Africa, Afro-Caribbean, street jazz, modern or urban dance. Rank will be at Assistant Professor (tenure track).

Candidates should be able to teach all levels of their genre and two or more of the following: 20th century dance history, dance education courses, anatomy and kinesiology, somatics (Pilates and/or yoga) or Viewing Dance for non-majors. Additionally, applicants should be able to choreograph or restage work for student performers in on-campus concerts. Applications are encouraged from candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the dance program and university through their teaching, research and service.

Teaching load is 12 credits per semester. Candidates will be expected to maintain a research or creative activity agenda commensurate with a program focused on teaching. Candidate will collaborate with current faculty in creating curriculum, policy and practice within the UA Dance Program. Service to the School, the university and the field at-large is also required. The candidate will be joining the UA Dance Program at an exciting time when the program is writing its next chapter; candidate will contribute to the vision through creating curriculum, collaborating with current faculty and strengthening community ties to the program. Successful candidates will be open-minded to new models of dance education, responsive to innovative applications of the art form, curious in seeking fresh directions and opportunities for dance and nimble in addressing change in higher educational environments.

The School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration is part of the Fine Arts Division of Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences and has a long history of excellence in performing, professional practice and teaching. The School offers undergraduate programs in theater; B.F.A, B.A., and minors in dance; and a graduate program in Arts Administration. UA is also home to The National Center for Choreography, providing professional artists full access to research facilities and opportunities to develop new work alongside the academic environment. Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (MFA, Ph.D or equivalent degree) in dance or related field.
  • Professional performing experience in dance.
  • Experience in teaching dance in a university setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of research/creative activity agenda at the national level.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the diversity of the dance program and university.
  • Experience with curriculum development, fundraising or student recruitment.
  • Demonstrated clear and consistent communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues with diverse artistic, aesthetic, and philosophical viewpoints and practices.
