Assistant Professor Instruction- Dance/Ballet

The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration seeks ballet specialist for position starting August 2019. Rank will be at Assistant Professor of Instruction (non-tenure track). Successful candidates will be experienced in teaching ballet to diverse students at all levels, use progressive pedagogy in teaching ballet technique, and use sound anatomical and wellness principles in their pedagogy. Candidates should be able to teach all levels of ballet, pointe and two or more of the following: ballet history, dance education courses, anatomy and kinesiology, somatics (Pilates or yoga) or Viewing Dance for non-majors. Additionally, applicants should be able to choreograph or restage work for student performers in on-campus concerts. Applications are encouraged from candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the dance program and university through their teaching and service.

Teaching load is 12 credits per semester; service to the School and the university is also required. The candidate will be joining the organization at an exciting time when the UA Dance Program is writing its next chapter; candidate will contribute to the vision through creating curriculum, collaborating with current faculty and strengthening community ties to the program. Successful candidates will be open-minded to new models of dance education, responsive to innovative applications of the art form, curious in seeking fresh directions and opportunities for dance and nimble in addressing change in higher educational environments.

The School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration is part of the Fine Arts Division of Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences and has a long history of excellence in performing, professional practice and teaching. The School offers undergraduate programs in theater; B.F.A, B.A., and minors in dance; and a graduate program in Arts Administration. UA is also home to The National Center for Choreography, providing professional artists full access to research facilities and opportunities to develop new work alongside the academic environment. Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in dance or related field.
  • Professional performing experience in dance.
  • Experience in teaching dance in a university setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (MFA, Ph.D, or equivalent degree) in dance or related field.
  • Evidence of teaching expertise at the regional or national level.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the diversity of the dance program and university.
  • Demonstrated clear and consistent communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues with diverse artistic, aesthetic, and philosophical viewpoints and practices.
