Haverford College invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position in Visual Studies for the 2019-2020 academic year beginning July 1, 2019. Specialization in the theory, history, interpretation, politics, culture, and/or aesthetics of the visual is required, as is the ability to theorize or critique the visual and visuality through a distinctly interdisciplinary lens and methodological approach. Geographical and disciplinary area is open, and research interests may include some combination of the following: contemporary art history and theory, cultural studies approaches, the study of spectacle and spectatorship, performance studies approaches, the ethics of the visual, the role of the visual through history, and cultural reception. Priority will be given to applicants whose scholarly interests and teaching engage issues of race broadly defined. Teaching responsibilities in a five-course load will include an Introduction to Visual Studies class as well as courses at all levels of the curriculum, including within the area of the candidate’s specialization. All requirements for the PhD should be completed by May 1, 2019.
