Departmental Overview

The Cal Ballroom Sports Club team prides itself on being UC Berkeley's one and only competitive International Ballroom Dance Team and one of the largest teams on the
West Coast. We offer Cal Students high quality dance instruction through our professional coaches and attend competitions throughout the state and nation. Our team members have both placed and won in national championships.


The standard coach will be responsible for attending practices, running drills, conducting private lessons, and traveling to competitions with the team. Specific responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Attending bi-weekly practice sessions.
  • Running well-structured group lessons.
  • Analyzing performance and instructing athletes in skills, techniques, and strategies in preparation for and during competition.
  • Attending all mandatory competitions.
  • Keeping in contact with dancers and club officers.
  • Complying with USADance, NDCA, UC Berkeley and Cal Sport Clubs regulations.
  • Maintaining a professional and positive presence in the ballroom community.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven record of competitive ballroom teaching experience a minimum of 5 years.
  • At least 7 years of competition experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with college-age athletes.
  • Knowledge of current standard coaching techniques/strategies, as well as syllabus figures.
  • Ability to establish appropriate and effective rapport and mentoring relationships with student-athletes.
  • Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certification (must be obtained within 30 days of employment).

Required Application Documents:
  • A resume with two to three profession/ballroom-related reference letters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of previous club coaching experience (high school level or above).
