The Department of Design at Brigham Young University is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, continuing-status, interdisciplinary faculty position in motion design and animation, beginning Winter Semester 2021. The position may also be filled with a visiting faculty. The department consists of fourteen full-time faculty and offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration and Photography, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design.

A Master of Fine Arts degree in a related field is required. Candidates with professional experience in motion design, 2D animation, 3D animation, or other digital animation markets are encouraged to apply. Teaching experience at the college/university level is strongly preferred.

Qualifications: An ideal candidate would present a portfolio showing evidence of innovative thinking, appealing visual narratives, and the ability to solve visual communication problems through individual, creative practice. Significant abilities in design, composition, color, and strong conceptual thinking should be evident. Although not the primary focus of this hire, new and evolving areas of the field such as interaction design, user experience design, entertainment design, cinematography, videography, and virtual or augmented reality would also be of interest. The successful candidate must be able to present and explain difficult visual concepts effectively, conduct studio demonstrations in a variety of media and methods, and individually mentor students in their educational and professional development. Any applicant should be able to communicate with students and collaborate with colleagues in a collegial manner

Responsibilities: Teaching assignments include introductory-to-advanced courses in motion design and other forms of animation. Depending on the candidate’s creative focus and professional experience, other teaching assignments may include foundational courses in design, critical studies or design theory, or other specialized subjects. Mastery of software and technology such as the Adobe Creative Suite, including and especially After Effects, is a must. Knowledge of Dragonframe, green screen compositing, Cinema 4D, or other equivalent 3D applications would be helpful, as would knowledge of traditional frame-by-frame animation.

Additional responsibilities include advising senior capstone and other mentored student projects, curriculum development, committee work, administrative assignments, and other regular services to the department, university, community, and profession. Full-time faculty are expected to help develop career opportunities for graduates and enhance the image of the department, college, and university. Faculty are also expected to maintain an active record of scholarly creative activity with a focus on working in major media markets. Scholarly efforts may include research and writing, publication, and/or creative work in major media markets.

To apply, please submit an online BYU Faculty application which is available at https://yjobs.byu.edu (job posting #90906), digital portfolio of personal, professional, and student work (provide links to the works on a separate page), letter of intent indicating qualifications for this position, a curriculum vitae, college transcripts (an official one is required for the terminal degree), and a diversity statement (one-page document explaining experiences and commitments to diversity in regards to your scholarly, teaching, mentoring, and service engagement). If you are teaching or have taught at a higher ed institution at any point in your schooling/career, submit all institutional teaching/student ratings by upload. Please email (stephanie_miller@byu.edu) questions regarding application materials. Please list the individual contact information for each of your three recommenders on the faculty application. At some point during the selection process, they may be contacted to submit their letters of reference electronically.

Diversity: The Brigham Young University Department of Design recognizes diversity and inclusivity as fundamental to its learning community and integral to design education. Our mission is to create and maintain an environment for learning that promotes respect for and appreciation of scholarship, academic freedom, human diversity, and the cultural mosaic of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; to promote excellence in instruction and creative and intellectual accomplishment, and to provide broadly accessible higher education for its students. We recognize and honor the innovation and growth that comes from voices of all kinds and we celebrate creativity and diversity in the Department of Design. We seek applicants who demonstrate a commitment to this perspective or have experience which would further the department’s diversity goals. Prospective candidates are invited to include a brief diversity statement with their application.
