The Department of Design at Brigham Young University is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, continuing-status, interdisciplinary faculty position in motion design and animation, beginning Winter Semester 2021. The position may also be filled with a visiting faculty. The department consists of fourteen full-time faculty and offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration and Photography, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design.
A Master of Fine Arts degree in a related field is required. Candidates with professional experience in motion design, 2D animation, 3D animation, or other digital animation markets are encouraged to apply. Teaching experience at the college/university level is strongly preferred.
Qualifications: An ideal candidate would present a portfolio showing evidence of innovative thinking, appealing visual narratives, and the ability to solve visual communication problems through individual, creative practice. Significant abilities in design, composition, color, and strong conceptual thinking should be evident. Although not the primary focus of this hire, new and evolving areas of the field such as interaction design, user experience design, entertainment design, cinematography, videography, and virtual or augmented reality would also be of interest. The successful candidate must be able to present and explain difficult visual concepts effectively, conduct studio demonstrations in a variety of media and methods, and individually mentor students in their educational and professional development. Any applicant should be able to communicate with students and collaborate with colleagues in a collegial manner
Responsibilities: Teaching assignments include introductory-to-advanced courses in motion design and other forms of animation. Depending on the candidate’s creative focus and professional experience, other teaching assignments may include foundational courses in design, critical studies or design theory, or other specialized subjects. Mastery of software and technology such as the Adobe Creative Suite, including and especially After Effects, is a must. Knowledge of Dragonframe, green screen compositing, Cinema 4D, or other equivalent 3D applications would be helpful, as would knowledge of traditional frame-by-frame animation.
Additional responsibilities include advising senior capstone and other mentored student projects, curriculum development, committee work, administrative assignments, and other regular services to the department, university, community, and profession. Full-time faculty are expected to help develop career opportunities for graduates and enhance the image of the department, college, and university. Faculty are also expected to maintain an active record of scholarly creative activity with a focus on working in major media markets. Scholarly efforts may include research and writing, publication, and/or creative work in major media markets.
