The Institute Academic Advisor is responsible for coordinating and providing academic advising for all undergraduate, degree seeking students at CalArts. This includes providing guidance to students regarding their academic requirements and institute policies and procedures, as well as working with students’ mentors and school administrators to monitor degree progress and to identify and support students who are struggling. In collaboration with the Provost’s Office and other student support offices, the Institute Academic Advisor also develops and maintains advising and outreach programs, and acts as a liaison with the schools on student issues, including exceptions to institute policies, academic progress, and transfer credit.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Advise incoming and continuing students on degree requirements and institute academic policies through in person, email, and phone communications.
Develop and maintain peer advising and peer tutoring programs.
Organize and staff on-campus advising events, including peer advising, new and transfer student academic orientations, and registration support sessions.
Lead outreach effort with students and with the Schools; advertise the services offered by Academic Advising through attendance at student performances and art shows, meetings with school administrators and faculty, and strategic communication plans.
Assist in the development of articulation agreements with local feeder schools, and advise students on options for completing degree requirements through appropriate transfer credit. Provide preliminary assessment of transfer credit for incoming or prospective students.
Develop and distribute advising materials to students and mentors.
Support the Registrar’s Office in conducting regular degree progress reviews for all BFA students; identify items of concern and work directly with the schools and the students to set goals for degree completion.
Collaborate with the Office of Information Technology to fine-tune the online registration and academic self-service interface, and the implementation and maintenance of EAB Navigate.
Provide exceptional, proactive service to students, faculty, staff, and other members of the community that the office serves.
