The Department of Film and Media Arts invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an emphasis in Animation. The Department is seeking candidates with the potential for exceptional research and excellence in teaching, who will actively contribute to the diversity of viewpoints, cultural backgrounds, experiences and practices of the faculty and students in the field of animation.
We are seeking candidates whose primary medium is animation. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the discourses of animation aesthetics and media specificities; knowledge of 2D and 3D animation production; familiarity with the histories and current practices of animation, as well as of the broader field of contemporary media arts. The candidate should be able to teach a variety of beginning and advanced undergraduate studio courses, such as 2D computer animation, 3D computer animation, special effects, post-production and compositing, animation in VR/AR and mobile devices, and animation in videogames. The candidates are also expected to develop senior and graduate-level studio and seminar courses in animation. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2019.
Minimum Requirements:
• MFA, PhD, or relevant terminal degree in related area.
• Demonstrate expertise in animation as defined broadly to include applied and conceptual issues and practices with fluency in both 2D and 3D computer animation.
• Demonstrate an active peer-reviewed screening, distribution and/or exhibition record.
• Demonstrate ability to teach a variety of animation courses.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives and ability to work across various media fields within the Department.
• Sophisticated knowledge in contemporary and historical issues and theory of animated images; innovative visual thinking in both traditional and digital processes;
• Experience working within a Film and Media Arts department (or related department) situated within a R1 institution, and a reflection of this in teaching pedagogies and research/creative works.
