Description

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is seeking an exceptional artist, educator and administrator to Chair its Master of Fine Arts Program.

The MFA Chair will provide leadership and vision in heading PAFA’s interdisciplinary, studio-centered graduate program. Candidates should be active practitioners who can engage with students working in a variety of media and disciplines. The Chair will be a passionate educator who brings a high level of rigor and criticality to their teaching. The Chair will be eager to work with other program heads, and will partner with PAFA’s museum director, curators and staff on museum/school programming.

As a practicing artist, the Chair will represent PAFA and its graduate program to the art world and academic constituencies. The Chair will maintain an active exhibition record, participate in conferences and seminars, attend gallery openings and advocate for professional opportunities for PAFA’s students. The Chair will be an active teacher and will collaborate with the graduate faculty who share in the collegial governance of the program. The MFA Chair will work closely with the Chair of PAFA’s Low-Residency MFA and will oversee the Post-Baccalaureate program, which is administered by a collective group of faculty that teaches in the program.

As an administrator, the Chair will lead in the planning and development of the MFA curriculum and will help identify areas for growth and opportunity. The Chair will work closely with the Dean of Enrollment to assist in graduate recruitment and with the Chief Marketing Officer to bring national awareness to the program. The Chair will lead in the assessment of the MFA program, review the quality and use of studio/classroom facilities, and manage the program budget. The Chair will evaluate faculty performance, recommend graduate faculty hires, and designate teaching assignments. Other key duties include leading the MFA midterm and final review critiques, planning and implementing graduate student exhibitions, and serving on school and museum committees.

 
Position Requirements

Qualified candidates will have a Master of Fine Arts degree with a minimum of five years’ experience teaching at the college level. Candidate should possess experience administering programs including curriculum and program development. Candidates must have strong leadership skills and the ability to work well with others, including the ability to work with a diverse student body, while engaging critically with a broad range of artistic concerns. Applicants should have a substantial national exhibition record.
