Welcome to the Department of Theatre

Our program offers the only Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the state, encompassing acting, performance, musical theatre and more. The Department of Theatre brings together talented and creative individuals interested in pursuing their passion and helps them realize their artistic abilities.

At USD, our faculty are qualified and effective leaders who bring a wealth of experiences and insights to the classroom. This expertise, along with our small class sizes, creates a rich learning environment for our students, who learn to think creatively and work collaboratively as they strive to grow, innovate and discover new capabilities. We connect our students with real-world experiences like internships and study abroad opportunities that allow them to learn both inside and outside the classroom. With these skills and experiences guiding them, our students go on to have successful careers in their field.

Join our community of dramatic, passionate and powerful performers and scholars.

If you are looking for a rewarding and exciting education built on personal and professional development, the USD Department of Theatre is the place for you. Real-world experiences, brought to you by our department, prepare you for immediate professional work or graduate studies.

Student Success Story

Success story Ben Schultz smiling.
I left USD's Department of Theatre with a robust portfolio that not only helped me stand out in my field, but helped me land a full-time job right out of college. Now as TD at The Nashville Children's Theatre, I am talking to college theatre students looking at interning in our shops. Very few of them have portfolios to share or have taken progress photos of things they have worked on to share. The amount I was prepared for the real world compared to what I am seeing from other universities is insane. USD truly sets you up for success for a professional career in theatre.
