Position Description: The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the search for a Teaching Assistant Professor of Lighting Design & Technology with a proposed start date of August 16, 2018. Teaching faculty positions contribute primarily to the educational mission of the university, with distinct responsibilities and opportunities for promotion and engagement within that mission. The Department of Theatre is committed to the continued professional and pedagogical growth of its teaching faculty. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track (specialized faculty) appointment on an academic year (nine-month) service basis paid over twelve months, with potential for renewal based on performance. Multi-year contracts typically follow promotion within this path.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have experience in lighting design for live productions and expertise in teaching lighting design and technology at the university level. MFA or terminal degree required. Special consideration given to those with experience designing in a range of disciplines and genres including Theatre, Dance, Opera, Television, or Film. Experience with curriculum development, mentorship and academic leadership is desirable. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, collaborative team at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois, a Tier One Research Institution. Minimum Qualifications: A terminal degree, record of professional work, and experience teaching are required. Effective organizational and communication skills as well as a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively are preferred, as is experience working with new methods of production and technologies related to lighting design including lighting systems, equipment and software integration. Experiences with students, performers, colleagues, and audiences from under-represented groups are desirable.

Duties: Teach major courses in BFA and MFA Lighting Design & Technology and engage in curriculum development, recruitment, artistic mentoring, academic advising, engagement, and creative contributions to the Theatre, Dance, and Opera season as needed. Committee and service work is required. Opportunities for professional development and departmental creative work are available.

Rank and Salary: Teaching Assistant Professor, salary commensurate with experience. The position reports to the Head of the Department of Theatre and is affiliated with Design, Technology and Management faculty and staff, jointly stewarded by the Department of Theatre and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
