The Department of Printmedia at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a Full-Time, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position, beginning in August of 2024. PROGRAM PROFILE
The Department of Printmedia offers an interdisciplinary exploration of printmaking that prioritizes experimentation and emphasizes the processes of research and discovery that are needed to bring ideas to fruition. Printmedia students are introduced to a broad range of tools and methods including intaglio, relief, sceenprinting, lithography, artist’s bookmaking, offset lithography, risography, and digital production. The Printmedia curriculum emphasizes students’ individual practices, conceptual development, research, and art historical precedent. The department has four full-time faculty and approximately 20 dedicated Master of Fine Arts (MFA) students, and annually enrolls over 700 undergraduate students in approximately 60 courses.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Full-time faculty in the Department of Printmedia teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. This position will provide curricular vision and oversee the highly popular area of offset printing, a process that has become more integral with print publications, artist’s books, zines, and multiples. The successful candidate will instruct primarily in the area of artists books and publications with the possibility of teaching risography, comics, graphic novels, offset lithography, graduate projects, and/or other classes within their sphere of expertise. There may also be opportunities to develop new offerings at the undergraduate or graduate level.
The faculty member will also take a leadership role in forging the future of the department and the school; participate in student advising, committee work, and special projects; contribute to the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development; and participate in departmental administration and school governance.
QUALIFICATIONS
An MFA in Studio Art or a terminal degree in a relevant field of study is required. Some college level teaching experience is preferred. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Working knowledge of artist’s books, offset productions, risography, and digital technologies is required. Experience in print techniques and processes such as screenprinting, lithography, etching, relief, and digital technologies is desired. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of SAIC, the ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of contemporary art practices and theories and have a capacity to engage and advise students from multiple disciplines. Candidates should have a robust artistic practice that demonstrates a commitment to a broad use and interpretation of contemporary printmedia and related disciplines. The ideal candidate will be adept in teaching across the printmedia curriculum and will be well-versed in contemporary theoretical and critical issues within contemporary art. Moreover, the ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of SAIC by bringing a perspective and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and artistic practice in the field. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
