  • Assistant Professor of Technical Direction and Production Management

    University of New Mexico

    The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of New Mexico seeks an Assistant Professor of Technical Direction beginning August 2024.  RANK: Assistant Professor. SALARY: $60,000 nine-month contract, with full benefits. This is a probationary position leading to a tenure decision.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Service: Qualified candidates will be able to teach all aspects of technical direction, including but not limited to all levels of stagecraft and 2D CAD. Manage all aspects of department’s scene shop and three producing facilities with one other full-time employee. Work with faculty and student scene designers in the implementation of their designs and technical production elements. Production Manager duties include: supervise, plan, and coordinate the budgetary, design and technical aspects of the department’s production season and facilitate an occasional rental.  Organize and run the weekly productions meetings. Generate appropriate calendars and maintain deadlines. Manage the department’s three theatres and scene shop to safe and professional standards. 
    Ability to teach 3D computer-aided drafting and design (CAD), automation, welding, rigging, and metal fabrication specifications is also highly desirable.


    Teaching: Two courses per semester.


    Artistic/Scholarly activity:  The candidate should have and maintain a national/ international presence as a theatre professional in the area of technical direction and or production management.


    Professional and academic activity in scene design, lighting design, sound design, and/or projection design is welcome as a secondary.


    Minimum qualifications:
    M.F.A. by appointment date or equivalent professional experience.  At least one year of teaching at the university level. 


    Preferred Qualifications:
    More than three years of teaching at the university level. Sustained record of university and/or professional technical direction and/or production management. National and international presence as a theatre professional. Record of professional activity.  A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.


    About: The University of New Mexico is the flagship school of higher learning in the state. The Department of Theatre and Dance has 200 undergraduate majors and Masters degrees in Dramatic Writing and Dance.
