The SMFA at Tufts University Ceramics Area is seeking a Part-Time Lecturer for a one-semester appointment for Fall 2025. The successful candidate will teach CER-0102 Introduction to Ceramics: Wheel in a lively and community-based ceramics area where college students work interdisciplinary throughout the school. The courses in question will be available to all Tufts undergraduates and to SMFA BFA and combined degree students as well as to our master’s degree candidates.

Course Description - Intro to Ceramics: Wheel

Wheel throwing is an integral part of the ceramics process. Learn to create forms on the wheel, including bowls, cups, vases, plates, and enclosed forms. Explore various surface design, glazing, and firing techniques to create both functional and expressive objects and learn to incorporate these techniques into an individual art practice. No prerequisites needed.

Non-SMFA students and MAT Art Education students will receive a letter grade.

Qualifications

An MFA is required. Additional qualifications include prior teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicant must demonstrate excellence in scholarship, research, and lecturing, and have an active exhibition record. The successful applicant should be able to lead in-class discussions of artistic examples and assigned readings, engage with diverse students, and create an inclusive class environment. It is important for the candidate to have advanced knowledge and skills in traditional wheel working.

In a context where many students work cross-disciplinarily and few specialize exclusively in one medium, the successful candidate will be expected to engage with students from beginning to graduate level; to teach across a wide range of skill levels; to engage in a contemporary and global conversation at the advanced and graduate level; and to be conversant in contemporary developments in the field. Additionally, candidates should have a broad understanding of art practice and theory applicable to a variety of visual art fields.

Application Instructions

All applications are submitted via Interfolio. Applicants should submit a cover letter that highlights relevant experience, a CV, 8-10 images of artwork, one sample syllabus (for a related course), and the names and email addresses of two references who may be contacted at a future date.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Please direct any questions to Michael Barsanti (michael.barsanti@tufts.edu) and Haley Sherif (haley.sherif@tufts.edu).

Offers are contingent on the completion of a successful background check.
