The Department of Theatre at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty

member in Scenic Design at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

The successful candidate will teach major courses in stagecraft, scenic design, property design and construction, and serve as a designer in the production season. They may also teach General Education courses. They also will carry out research and creative activities in national and international design projects, scenic technology, and/or property artisanship.

In addition to teaching, the position responsibilities include student advisement and mentoring, holding weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, and serving on committees at the department, college, and university levels. Tenure and promotion considerations require a record of teaching effectiveness, contributions to the field through creative activities and research, and contributions to the University and Community.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

• Terminal Degree (MFA) in scenic design or equivalent relevant field of study from an accredited institution.

• Evidence of college or university-level teaching in several of the following specialties: scenic design, scenic construction, property design/construction, scenic painting, or use of standard theatrical equipment (e.g. counterweight systems, rigging, scene shifting technology, use of soft goods).

• Extensive professional design experience demonstrating diversity of genre and aesthetic at venues of varying size.

• Evidence of proficiency with design software-based drafting (Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or similar). Preferred Qualifications:

• Evidence of minimum three years of college or university-level teaching utilizing culturally responsive pedagogy that creates an equitable environment for students, including work both in classrooms and scene shops.

• Demonstrated experience of receptivity to diverse perspectives from a student population with a broad range of knowledge and skills in theatre production techniques.

• Demonstrated experience with scenic design, art direction, or production design across multiple genres (e.g. theatre, immersive theatre, dance, opera, film, television); experience in other areas including, but not limited to, performance art, installation art, museum exhibit design, architectural design, and industrial design.

• Demonstrated currency with contemporary practices in world and regional theatre.

• Evidence of collaborative design with artists of different disciplines, backgrounds, and experience levels at venues with seating capacities ranging from fewer than 150 seats to larger than 400 seats.

• Demonstrated experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring, and a history of mentoring students into creative industries.
