Faculty Position in Film and Media Production

Department: NUQ Communication Program

Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time open rank faculty appointment in Film and Media Production, in the Communication Program, to begin August 1, 2025.

Production faculty contribute to research and scholarship through high-quality, nationally, and internationally recognized films and/or other creative works. In addition to a demonstrated creative research track record commensurate with rank, or highly promising research trajectory for emerging candidates, applicants should have the following: work that is comparative or transnational, competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance.

Teaching expectations include two courses per semester, to include some of the following courses: Narrative Film Production, Documentary Production, Cinematography and Lighting, Post-Production, Screenwriting, Directing, Producing, Production Design, Acting and Sound/Composition. Ideally, the candidate would also have an interest in research and teaching opportunities across other areas, such as digital animation, interactive game design, or the like. Candidates should also be willing to serve on the Film and Design Minor Committee and/or be the Faculty Advisor to Studio 20Q, NU-Q’s student-led film production company. There are also opportunities to collaborate with NU-Q’s Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis.

Candidates must hold an MFA and/or PhD by the position start date. They should also have teaching experience in higher education, significant professional experience, and be familiar with current digital production practices. NU-Q’s production courses employ state of the art equipment, software, and studios to support and facilitate student learning.

NU-Q is a globally embedded institution: it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to a vibrant student life, academic excellence, and to high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region; women; and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications received by October 1, 2024, will receive the highest priority. The search will continue until the position is filled or the search closed.
